Taking midwifery education forward globally: an interactive Midwifery Education Symposium

We know from recent evidence such as the 2021 State of the World’s Midwifery that one of the main factors preventing community members from accessing quality sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn and adolescent health services (SRMNAH) is inadequate midwifery education. Around the world, midwifery education suffers from insufficient numbers and unequal distribution of education and training programmes, poor quality programmes that do not meet ICM’s Global Standards for Midwifery Education as well as insufficient qualified and competent educators. Yet quality midwifery education is an essential factor in achieving quality midwifery services in every country.

The capacity has been filled.

The International Confederation of Midwives (ICM), UNFPA, WHO and Laerdal, together with other partners, have formed the Alliance to Improve Midwifery Education (AIME) in communities around the world. These efforts are the starting point of strengthening the midwifery workforce, supporting the next generation of midwives to provide high-quality care, and closing the global shortage of more than 900,000 midwives.

As an add-on to the 33rd ICM Triennial Congress, ICM, UNFPA, WHO and Laerdal will co-host the first-ever post-Congress Midwifery Education Symposium on Thursday 15 June, 09:00 – 17:30. This symposium is designed for midwifery educators, practising midwives teaching midwifery students in practice settings and all midwives and others working to strengthen midwifery education in countries. Drawing on the WHO, ICM, UNFPA and UNICEF (2019) Strengthening quality midwifery education for Universal Health Coverage 2030: framework for action, key features of the symposium include:

  • Opening and closing plenary sessions with leaders and experts in midwifery education
  • Hands-on activities designed to encourage the exploration and familiarisation of new tools and resources for midwife educators and students
  • Network-building with key stakeholders in midwifery education

**Please note this session will be delivered only in English.**

Costs to participate

Sponsored by ICM, Laerdal and UNFPA, the symposium is free to all Congress Delegates working in midwifery education.

Refreshments and lunch will be served.

    Abstract

UNFPA, ICM, Laerdal and WHO are co-hosting a post-Congress Midwifery Education Symposium. As the core partners of the Alliance to Improve Midwifery Education (AIME) these organisations are working together to help align partners to collectively implement and communicate the joint “WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, ICM, “Strengthening Quality Midwifery Education for Universal Health Coverage 2030: Framework for Action” (2019).

Funded by UNFPA, Laerdal and ICM this hands-on symposium provides an opportunity for midwife educators to become familiar with a range of new midwifery education tools and resources that they can use in their teaching roles.

Across the day, participants will rotate through four stations, exploring new midwifery education resources developed by the partner organisations. Midwives from across the globe can try out the resources, provide feedback and discuss how they can be used to improve midwifery education in their diverse contexts.

The symposium will be facilitated by a team from UNFPA, ICM, Laerdal and WHO.

The symposium is available only to pre-registered participants or by individual invitation.

    Lunch is provided.
